What GPX Viewer does

GPX Viewer opens GPX files, shows them on official and open maps and analyses them with graphs, statistics, terrain and historical weather. It is a native application for macOS, with a separate Windows edition and a lighter viewer in this website. Everything here is based on the source code and release notes; nothing planned is presented as finished.

Three editions, one file format

macOS, Apple silicon

macOS 13 and later, arm64

SwiftUI and AppKit with Apple's MapKit, Liquid Glass on macOS 26 and later. The most complete edition: selectable main graph, combined and stacked graphs, time axes, commercial maps with your own key, playback, the measure tool and historical weather.

macOS, Intel

macOS 10.13 to 12, x86_64

A separate AppKit application with the same core and the same features, adapted to older systems: Apple Maps falls back to open maps on 10.13, a narrow certificate path keeps official servers reachable.

Windows

Windows 10 and 11, x64

A separate code base with the same GPX model, gradient colours and statistics, official maps, terrain, route analysis and editing. Features added to the Mac editions since October 2026 are listed as missing or not verified until Windows is checked.

iPhone: Private development builds only. No public release and no download. Android: No public Android build exists. Wear OS extension: On hold. Not a released product. GPX Viewer Web Lite opens GPX files in your browser.

Files

Open what you recorded, exactly as recorded.

GPX 1.0 and 1.1 tracks, routes and waypoints, several files at once and by drag and drop. Extensions such as heart rate, cadence, power, temperature and device fields are read and kept; segments are never joined, so a pause in the recording stays a pause. File Info shows the full XML and identifies the recording app or device.

Opening files
Formats
GPX 1.0 and 1.1. FIT is not opened (Garmin's licence does not allow its SDK here).
Original file
Never changed by opening or analysing; edits are saved only when you choose.
Large files
Tested with 100,000 and 500,000 points.
Privacy
Files are read on your computer and never uploaded.

Mapping

The track over the map you choose.

Apple Maps on Mac, OpenStreetMap, OpenTopoMap and CyclOSM, national imagery and topographic maps, overlays such as cycle infrastructure and hiking routes, and commercial services with your own key. Every map keeps its owner's credit visible.

Maps and layers: general maps, official imagery and overlays, each overlay with its own layer properties.
Official aerial imagery from Geoportail Luxembourg, with its credit on the map.

Official maps

Imagery from the agencies that survey the land.

Where a national or regional mapping agency publishes imagery and maps openly, GPX Viewer offers them, and suggests official imagery when the map is over its area.

  • Luxembourg Geoportail aerial (summer, leaf-off), topographic, 1:20,000, hybrid, full catalogue
  • Belgium Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels aerial imagery, NGI maps
  • France IGN aerial imagery and Plan IGN
  • Netherlands PDOK aerial imagery and BRT map
  • Switzerland swisstopo SWISSIMAGE and national map
  • Austria basemap.at imagery and map
  • Germany basemap.de and four states' aerial imagery

Graphs

A profile that shows where it gets steep.

The elevation is coloured by gradient over 50 m. Fourteen measurements can be the main graph, up to three can be combined on their own scales or stacked, against distance, elapsed time or moving time. The graph and the map share one cursor.

The graph in detail
Distance
0.0 km
Elevation
165 m
Gradient
- %
Speed
- km/h
400 m 100 m 40 km/h

Drag along the profile, or use the arrow keys: the marker follows on the route.

Statistics

Numbers with their rules written down.

Distance
Geodesic, along the recorded points, never across a gap between segments.
Elevation gain
Changes of at least 5, 2 or 1 m (your choice), restarted in every segment.
Moving time
Steps of up to 300 s at 0.5 m/s or more within one segment.
Section
Select part of the graph: every figure is computed for that part.
How values are calculated
Statistics with the gain hysteresis choice, elapsed, moving and stopped time, speeds, gain and loss.

Terrain and route context

The ground under the track.

Official terrain

Terrain heights from Geoportail Luxembourg, IGN in France or worldwide terrain tiles, compared with the recorded elevation, with the difference as its own line.

3D relief

The route draped over a relief model of the surrounding terrain, in both Mac editions.

Route context

Land cover, the national cycle network, roads and paths, surfaces, bridges and tunnels along the route, as bands under the profile. Map-derived, labelled as estimates.

Historical weather macOS, from 0.3.0

Estimated weather for every point of a recording.

On request, GPX Viewer retrieves historical weather for the places and hours of the recording from the Open-Meteo archive and matches it to each point's timestamp. The Weather inspector summarises it, a timeline follows it over time and eight weather lines can join the graph.

Historical weather for the synthetic sample: the route on OpenTopoMap, the modelled air temperature beside the elevation profile and the Weather inspector.
Matching
Places about every 10 km and at 300 m height changes; hourly values matched in UTC and blended between places.
Values
Air and feels-like temperature, dew point, humidity, precipitation, rain, snowfall, wind speed, direction and gusts, pressure, cloud cover, conditions. Visibility is not provided by the source.
Timeline and graph
Temperature, hourly precipitation and wind over time, sharing the cursor with the map and graph; eight modelled graph lines.
Cache and offline
Answers saved on the Mac (at most 20 MB), shown offline, cleared with one button.
Accuracy
Model estimates for grid cells of about 9 to 25 km and whole hours, not measurements at the track; marked Modelled. Sensor values in the file stay separate.
Privacy and source
Only rounded places and dates are sent, only when you ask. Weather data by Open-Meteo.com (CC BY 4.0), based on ECMWF data and Copernicus information.
The weather timeline over the recording time: air temperature as a line and arrows showing where the wind blows.
Historical temperature on the graph: the modelled air temperature on its own scale beside the elevation profile, credited to Open-Meteo in the legend.

Recording

Recording belongs to the phone.

The Mac and Windows editions view and analyse recordings; they do not record. A GPX Viewer for iPhone with recording is in development. Private development builds only. No public release and no download.

Recordings from any app or device that writes GPX open in every edition, including accuracy, barometer and device temperature fields where the recorder stores them.

Editing and measuring

Change a copy, keep the original.

Draw and route

Draw a route by hand or let BRouter follow roads and paths for cycling, hiking or driving.

Repair and reshape

Split, merge, simplify, clean outliers, reverse, shift times and fix elevations, with undo for every step.

Measure

Measure distances and areas on the map, and draw a terrain profile along any measured line.

Complete feature comparison

Every feature by edition. Statuses come from the source code and release notes; a feature of a release in preparation is marked as such.
